AREAS AFFECTED: Northern St. Lawrence; Northern Franklin; Eastern Clinton; Southeastern St. Lawrence; Southern Franklin; Western Clinton; Western Essex; Eastern Essex

DESCRIPTION: At 310 PM EDT, Doppler radar was tracking a cluster of strong thunderstorms along a line extending from near Bombay to near Waverly to 7 miles south of Santa Clara to 7 miles northwest of Lake Eaton Campground. Movement was northeast at 40 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 50 mph. SOURCE...Multiple sites have observed 35 to 50 mph gusts. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. Locations impacted include... Mooers Village, Plattsburgh International Airport, Burke Village, Brushton, Malone Village, Keeseville, Saranac Lake, Tupper Lake Village, Adirondack Regional Airport, Dannemora, Champlain Village, Chateaugay Village, Lake Placid, Franklin, Jay, Champlain, Bangor, Burke, Moira, and Altona. This includes Interstate 87 between mile markers 137 and 176.

INSTRUCTION: If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. These storms may intensify, so be certain to monitor local radio stations and available television stations for additional information and possible warnings from the National Weather Service. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch remains in effect until 900 PM EDT for northern New York.

A contrail is an artificial cloud, created by the passing of an aircraft.

Contrails form because water vapor in the exhaust of aircraft engines is suspended in the air under certain temperatures and humidity conditions. These contrails are called exhaust contrails.

Another type of contrail can form due to a temporary reduction in air pressure moving over the plane's surface, causing condensation. These are called aerodynamic contrails.

When you can see your breath on a cold day, it is also because of condensation. The reason contrails last longer than the condensation from your breath is because the water in contrails freezes into ice particles.
