DESCRIPTION: ...Forecast flooding changed to Minor severity for the following rivers in Connecticut... Connecticut River At Middle Haddam affecting Middlesex County. Connecticut River At Hartford affecting Middlesex and Hartford Counties. For the Connecticut River...including Hartford, Middle Haddam... Minor flooding is forecast. * WHAT...Minor flooding is occurring and minor flooding is forecast. * WHERE...Connecticut River at Middle Haddam. * WHEN...Until further notice. * IMPACTS...At 8.0 feet, Flooding is expected in low lying sections along the Connecticut River from Wethersfield and Glastonbury downstream through Cromwell, Middletown and Portland. Boating interests should prepare for a period of swift river flows. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 3:55 PM EDT Thursday the stage was 7.5 feet. - Bankfull stage is 7.0 feet. - Recent Activity...The maximum river stage in the 24 hours ending at 3:55 PM EDT Thursday was 7.8 feet. - Forecast...The river will fall below flood stage late tonight to 6.5 feet late tomorrow morning. It will then rise to 6.8 feet early Saturday morning. It will fall to 6.6 feet late Saturday morning. Hail is a form of precipitation which is recognized by large solid balls or
clumps of ice. Hail is created by thunderstorm clouds with strong updrafts of wind.
As the hailstones remain in the updraft, ice is deposited onto them until their
weight becomes heavy enough for them to fall to the earth's surface.
Hail storms can cause significant damage to crops, aircrafts, and man-made structures,
despite the fact that the duration is usually less than ten minutes.

A mammatus cloud is a cloud with a unique feature which resembles
a web of pouches hanging along the base of the cloud.
In the United States, mammatus clouds tend to form in the warmer months, commonly
in the Midwest and eastern regions.
While they usually form at the bottom of a cumulonimbis cloud, they can also form
under altostratus, altocumulus, stratocumulus, and cirrus clouds. Mammatus clouds
warn that severe weather is close.
