Flash Flood Warning issued July 1 at 11:49PM EDT until July 2 at 2:45AM EDT by NWS Blacksburg VA
AREAS AFFECTED: Ashe, NC; Watauga, NC; Wilkes, NC
DESCRIPTION: At 1149 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated that heavy rain has exited the area, leaving only intermittent light rainfall. However, a threat of flooding remains due to between 2.5 and 4 inches of rain that fell earlier this evening, especially in small creeks and streams that remain swollen and swift-flowing. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. SOURCE...Radar. IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Boone... Wilkesboro... Blowing Rock... Deep Gap... Todd... Wilbar... Foscoe... This includes the following streams and drainages... Darnell Creek, Dutch Creek, Cove Creek, Church Branch, Dugger Creek, Beaver Creek, Brushy Fork, Craborchard Creek, Elk Creek and Clear Branch.
INSTRUCTION: Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding. Graupel is a form of precipitation that is created by atmospheric conditions
which cause supercooled water droplets to contact snow crystals and freeze to
their surface.
Sometimes known as soft hail or snow pellets, graupel is delicate and easily
destroyed by touch. Whereas hail usually falls during severe weather, graupel
doesn't require such conditions to form, and can form in mild precipitation
similar to situations which produce snowfall.

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped
hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.
When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area
of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical
gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific
to any geographic area.
Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole,
skypunch, and cloud hole.
