AREAS AFFECTED: Franklin, VA
DESCRIPTION: At 439 PM EDT, Doppler radar indicated the heavy rain producing thunderstorms prompted the warning have exited the area. Flash flooding is ongoing or expected to begin shortly as water from the earlier heavy rains collects in streams and other low-lying areas. HAZARD...Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms. SOURCE...Radar. IMPACT...Flash flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other poor drainage and low-lying areas. Some locations that will experience flash flooding include... Rocky Mount... Boones Mill... Penhook... Burnt Chimney... Wirtz... Western Smith Mountain Lake... Northwest Smith Mountain Lake... This includes the following streams and drainages... Coles Creek, Gills Creek, Little Creek, Blackwater River, Dillons Mill Branch, Hatchet Creek and Furnace Creek.
INSTRUCTION: Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood deaths occur in vehicles. In hilly terrain there are hundreds of low water crossings which are potentially dangerous in heavy rain. Do not attempt to cross flooded roads. Find an alternate route. When it is safe to do so, please send your reports of flooding, including mudslides or flooded roads, to the National Weather Service by calling toll free at 1...8 6 6...2 1 5...4 3 2 4. Fog is technically a type of stratus cloud, which lies along the
ground and obscures visibility.
It is usually created when humidity in the air condenses into tiny water droplets.
Because of this, some places are more prone to foggy weather, such as regions
close to a body of water.
Fog is similar to mist; both are the appearance of water droplets suspended in
the air, but fog is the term applied to the condition when visibility is less than 1 km.
