AREAS AFFECTED: Tarrant; Dallas; Johnson; Ellis

DESCRIPTION: At 854 PM CDT, Doppler radar was tracking a strong thunderstorm over Kennedale, moving east at 30 mph. HAZARD...Wind gusts up to 50 mph. SOURCE...Radar indicated. IMPACT...Gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects. This strong thunderstorm will be near... Arlington, Mansfield, Kennedale, and Pantego around 900 PM CDT. Grand Prairie around 905 PM CDT. Dallas, Cedar Hill, and Cedar Hill State Park around 915 PM CDT. Duncanville around 920 PM CDT. Other locations impacted by this storm include Lillian, Lake Arlington, Joe Pool Lake, Griffith, Mountain Creek Lake, Briaroaks, Dalworthington Gardens, and Egan. This includes the following highways... Interstate 35W between mile markers 22 and 34. Interstate 35E between mile markers 393 and 405, and between mile markers 431 and 441. Interstate 20 between mile markers 438 and 465. Interstate 30 between mile markers 16 and 43.

INSTRUCTION: If outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building. Frequent cloud to ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Lightning can strike 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle.

Graupel is a form of precipitation that is created by atmospheric conditions which cause supercooled water droplets to contact snow crystals and freeze to their surface.

Sometimes known as soft hail or snow pellets, graupel is delicate and easily destroyed by touch. Whereas hail usually falls during severe weather, graupel doesn't require such conditions to form, and can form in mild precipitation similar to situations which produce snowfall.

Hole Punch Clouds Next Topic: Mammatus Clouds

A hole punch cloud is an unusual occurrence when a disk-shaped hole appears in a cirrostratus, cirrocumulus, or altocumulus cloud.

When part of the cloud forms ice crystals, water droplets in the surrounding area of the cloud evaporate. The effect of this process produces a large elliptical gap in the cloud. The hole punch cloud formation is rare, but it is not specific to any geographic area.

Other names which have been used to describe this phenomena include fallstreak hole, skypunch, and cloud hole.
